Super Star Wars (1992) Super NES Video Game Overview

Super Star Wars is probably the hardest Super Nintendo game that I've ever played. Which is probably why I ended up watching my brother play it more often than I actually played it myself. It's a side scrolling platformer game that follows the story of the original Star Wars. If I'm not mistaken, it's also an update of the original Star Wars game that came out for the NES the year before. From the screenshots that I can see online, it's pretty much the same game except the NES version has 8-bit graphics while Super Star Wars has 16-bit graphics.

I don't even know how we got the game in the first place or when we got it. I'm pretty sure it was the later, 1998 release of the game that we got because I don't remember the JVC logo being on the box or on the cartridge. I don't have the game anymore so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure it was the last Super NES game we got before we got the Nintendo 64 the following year. So it had to have been the 1998 version that we had rather than the 1992 JVC version. But it's possible that we had the original version since it would've at least been available at second hand stores throughout the '90s.

What I liked about this game is that you could choose between playing as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo or Chewbacca as well as fly an X-Wing for the Death Star trench at the end of the game. Which was pretty cool for a Super Nintendo game. I mean switching between characters was nothing new as many other games had done it before this one, but flying an X-Wing and the mechanics for doing so were pretty good for a Super Nintendo game.

As I mentioned before the game was pretty hard. Even the first level. There were so many obstacles to overcome in the game just going through the Tatooine portions of the game. I mean you had Tusken Raiders, Jawas, Womp Rats (I think that's what they are), and even the Sarlacc Pit Monster at the end of the Tatooine part of the game. Which is weird because we don't actually see the Sarlacc until Return of the Jedi. That's probably the one thing I don't like about this game. It's really difficult even on the normal or easy level. I mean it's more difficult than Super Mario World is and Super Mario World isn't even that hard of a game.

I don't have a whole lot more to say about this game since I don't have the game to play to actually do a review of it. I'm just going off of what I remember from when I did own the game. Maybe someday I'll find another copy when I'm out at a flea market, geek event or at Ottawa Comiccon. If I do I will definitely pick it up if I find for a decent price because I'd love to be able to play it again on my Super Nintendo console.
